OUR  T I P S

TIP -1   Youth gangs are a critical element impacting school environment.
Every large urban school district is affect by street gang activity to some degree. However,
youth gangs are not simply a large city or inner city problem. Nor are gangs a problem of a
specific race or culture. Street gang involvement crosses ethnic, racial and geographic
boundaries.

TIP -2   Gang Recruitment of Youth (students) begins early:
Research data has identified that the primary age for recruitment into street gangs is
between 11 - 15 years old. Gangs actively recruit new members in this ages range from
schools.

TIP -3   Physical Indicators of Gang Involvement:
Gang  members will advertise their gang involvement through graffiti, clothing, hand signals
and gang style language.

TIP -4   Sign(s) of Actual Gang Involvement:
Once youths/students become directly involved in a gang, their behavior will most likely
change. This change may be gradual over time or happen suddenly as if over night. It is
likely that the youth will advertise their new status at school, become disrespectful, display
behavioral problems and become increasingly defiant. These individuals may also be given
nicknames, get tattoos and display a negative attitude in general.

TIP -5    PREVENTION PLAN:
Youths who are at risk and vulnerable to join a gang may be present in many different types
of environments.  These youths will continually be attracted to gang involvement, unless
parents, educators and members of the community at large, are aware of the factors which
attract youths to gangs and the signs of possible gang involvement.
